Alex Thomas Award

The Alex Thomas Effort Award is presented annually in memory of Alex Thomas, a three-year member of the James Madison High School Swim and Dive Team, who died in an automobile accident in June 2001, just prior to completing his junior year. Alex was not the best swimmer on his team nor always the easiest to coach, but he was proud of his team and teammates and dedicated to both. That pride and dedication twice led to his being among the handful of JMHS swimmers to qualify for Regional competition.

To honor both his memory and example, Alex's family and friends have established a memorial fund that seeks to recognize and assist members of the JMHS Swim and Dive Team who, like Alex, find ways to get the most out of their personal potential. The Alex Thomas Effort Award provides recognition to "unsung heroes" who might not otherwise receive it. It provides assistance in the form of a one-year scholarship in the amount of up to $1,000 and is open to any junior or senior members of the JMHS Swim and Dive Team. The scholarship may be used for any form of accredited post-secondary education (trade or technical school, community or junior college, or a four-year institution).
